Can weight loss help with varicose veins?

Winning the weight war can go a long way towards reducing vein problems.
Though commonly associated with older adults, varicose veins still crop up frequently in the 20s and 30s — and are increasingly related to obesity.
Dr Jason Toniolo, vascular surgeon and Director of The Art of Vein Care, says veins are often an unrecognised complication of extra weight gain for patients – and can cause increased pressure on the leg veins and leg valves.
This in turn may cause them to weaken and break.
“Excess weight can also slow down the exchange of blood flow between deeper and the superficial veins, and again this creates more varicose veins,” he says.
“Obesity is a complex illness that requires a multidisciplinary and empathic approach.
Quite often treating vein issues early, can help prevent them snowballing into something more serious particularly when undertaken as part of a holistic approach to weight health.”
The telltale signs of vein disease include spider veins and varicose veins, restless legs, pain after long periods of sitting or standing as well as itchy legs around the vein areas.
